Cross-Generational Collaboration Under Threat
Age Verification Policy Timeline
Roblox has progressively introduced restrictions that disrupt communication and publishing within myth hunting communities across age groups.
Key Impacts:
- Under-13 and unverified users face restricted or blocked direct messaging
- Chat access increasingly requires age verification
- Communication is segmented by age groups, limiting coordination
- Publishing restrictions compound existing collaboration barriers
Chat Age Banding - The New Communication Wall
Roblox is implementing age-based communication restrictions that will prevent users from different age groups from chatting with each other. This isn't just about safety - it's a fundamental restructuring of how the platform works.
Age Bands - Who Can Talk to Whom
Users will ONLY be able to communicate with others in their same age band:
- Under 9: Can only chat with other under-9 users
- 9-12: Can only chat with other 9-12 year olds
- 13-15: Can only chat with other 13-15 year olds
- 16-17: Can only chat with other 16-17 year olds
- 18-20: Can only chat with other 18-20 year olds
- 21+: Can only chat with other 21+ users
- A 14-year-old myth hunter cannot chat with their 17-year-old mentor
- Group investigations spanning different ages become impossible
- Myth groups with mixed-age members will be fragmented
- Cross-generational knowledge transfer and mentorship is effectively killed
Verification Required: To determine your age band, Roblox requires ID verification through a third-party service called Persona. Without verification, your chat capabilities may be severely restricted or disabled entirely.
The ID Verification Problem
After January 1st, many creators will be forced to choose ID verification as their only path to publishing rights. This presents serious practical and cultural problems for the myth community.
Why ID Verification Isn't a Universal Solution
The myth community thrives on alternate accounts. Myth hunting isn't just about one account. It's about creating entire narratives, multiple characters, and collaborative storylines. Many creators manage 5, 10, or even 20+ accounts as part of their projects, each with their own game. ID verification for each account isn't just impractical. It's impossible under Roblox's current system.
- Expired or invalid IDs: Not everyone has a current government-issued ID. Licenses expire, people move, documents get lost. Renewing ID documents can take weeks or months depending on your location.
- Minors and young creators: Many myth community members are under 18 and don't have driver's licenses or government IDs yet. Some regions don't issue IDs to minors at all.
- Privacy and safety concerns: Uploading government identification to a gaming platform raises legitimate privacy concerns. Not everyone is comfortable sharing sensitive documents, especially for alt accounts or creative personas.
- International barriers: ID verification systems often favor certain countries and document types. Creators from regions with different ID standards face technical barriers or outright rejection.
- Multiple account limitations: Even if you verify one account, you can't verify 10 or 20 accounts with the same ID. The myth community's creative model fundamentally relies on multiple accounts.
- Technical and access issues: Not everyone has access to scanning equipment, clear photo capabilities, or stable internet to complete verification. Some users face repeated verification failures due to technical glitches.
- Fear of doxxing and harassment: Given the community's history with bad actors and targeted harassment, some creators rightfully fear connecting their real identity to their creative work.
Privacy Concerns: Persona & Data Security
Roblox uses Persona, a third-party identity verification service, to process government IDs. This raises serious concerns:
- Third-party data handling: Your government ID and personal data are processed by an external company, not just Roblox
- Data retention: Questions remain about how long your ID data is stored and who has access to it
- Roblox's breach history: Roblox has experienced data breaches in the past, including leaked user data. Trusting them with government ID information adds significant risk
- No opt-out for chat: If you want to communicate on Roblox, you'll eventually be forced to verify - there's no privacy-respecting alternative
The reality is clear: For many myth creators, purchasing Robux before January 1st is the only viable path to maintaining publishing rights. After that deadline, ID verification becomes mandatory. And for a community built on alternate accounts and collaborative storytelling, that's not a solution. It's a death sentence for the art form as we know it.
How You Can Help
Every action matters. Here's what you can do right now to protect the myth community:
- Check your eligibility immediately - it's important that every account can publish games
- Purchase Robux before January 1st - minimum $1 qualifies you (or you'll have to ID verify)
- Create all planned myth accounts NOW - load Robux on each one
- Verify your age - use your ID to regain access to studio + other features
- Spread awareness - developers and creators need to know about the Dec 17 deadline, and January 1st deadline

Campaign Archive
A look back at previous threats to the myth community and our responses. History shows a pattern of Roblox policies systematically restricting creative communities.
Publishing Requirements Crisis
New publishing requirements threaten to lock creators out of updating their own games. ID verification or Robux purchases become mandatory for publishing rights. This affects the ability to publish OR update existing public experiences.
Unrated Games Crisis
Roblox announced that all unrated games would be made private on September 30, 2025. Thousands of classic myth games faced deletion unless owners completed the Experience Questionnaire. SKM mobilized the community to rate games and raise awareness.
About Stop Killing Myths
SKM is a community-led movement fighting against Roblox's systematic restrictions on community-driven creative collaboration.
Why we're critical of Roblox
Roblox Corporation has the resources and reach to preserve its community's deeprooted culture. Yet its focus seems driven by investors and profit. The myth community faces systematic dismantling through policy changes. First privating games with less than 1,000 visits, now chat restrictions, then publishing requirements. This coordinated erosion of collaboration tools threatens the medians that allow creativity, which have defined our community for years.
